Records
All police reports must be obtained through the police records clerk, Diane L. Alvator, located within the Police Department in the Municipal Building at 171 Bay Avenue, Highlands, New Jersey 07732, (732) 872-1158.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES will the contents of any report be divulged by phone or sent by fax.

Record: Anything such as a document or photograph providing permanent evidence or information of an incident. i.e.: incident cards, investigation reports, arrest reports and motor vehicle accident reports.

Public Records Requests:

In accordance with the Open Public Records Act (OPRA) public records may be picked up Monday - Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Some public records may be subject to redactions based on guidelines set forth by OPRA, www.nj.gov/opra

Be advised that many police records are restricted from public access or examination. If you are a victim of an incident, the police department will make every effort to assure that you receive the information you need, but even so, some materials may not be available to you.

Obtaining a Motor Vehicle Accident Report in Person:

You may obtain a copy of a motor vehicle accident report at the Highlands Police Department, Monday - Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The above fee schedule will be used when determining the cost.

Please allow 7 - 10 business days for the report to be completed and processed.

 

Obtaining a Motor Vehicle Accident Report by mail:

Please send a legal size, self-addressed stamped envelope along with a detailed request to: Diane Alvator, Records, Highlands Police Department, 171 Bay Avenue, Highlands, New Jersey 07732.

Your request should indicate the name of the party involved, date, location of the incident and a $5.00 check or money order made payable to: Borough of Highlands.

DO NOT SEND CASH!!!!

 

Discovery:

If you are a defendant and have been arrested for an indictable offense, you or your attorney must make a written request for discovery to the Monmouth County Prosecutor‚s Office, Courthouse, 71 Monument Park, Freehold, New Jersey 07728.

If you are a defendant and have been arrested for a non-indictable offense, you or your attorney must make a written request for discovery to the Highlands Police Department, Records.

Your request should indicate the name of the party, offense date, type of incident and court date.
